Beware of new EU Law if you are hiring a car in Switzerland

A Swiss-registered hire car cannot be steered across the border to France, Germany, Italy or Austria by an EU citizen and this rule came into force from 1st may 2016.

Rulemaking authorities in Brussels have been busy trying to streamline customs procedures within the European Union (EU). There is a lot of confusion in crossing borders if you have to drive your rental car in Europe. New rules put a lot of restriction on renting a car in Switzerland and go outside the border for driving in EU, Which is why you need to stay aware of the new car hire rules.

According to the new rules, EU citizens are no more eligible to drive their rental car which is registered only in Switzerland. A Swiss-registered hire car cannot be driven across the border to France, Germany, Austria or Italy by an EU citizen. The rule bans EU citizens from driving non-EU registered rental cars in the EU. The problem was picked by a British newspaper and unveiled all the restriction and consequences of driving your hire cars cross the border.
